When he was three...

I want to remember he was absolutely obsessed, like OCD obsessed, with orcas. Don't dare call them killer whales. He has little ones he bathes with and a big stuffed one that he sleeps with each night. His preschool has several orca whale toys and he has claimed every last one of them to the point that the other kids call the whales, Luke's Orcas.

I want to remember that he called hummingbirds "honey birds". I loved it so much that I never corrected him.

I want to remember how his teacher, Miss Stephanie would ask me how I can go to work each and every day and leave this amazing little man. How another one of his teachers, Miss Jenn, would tell me she hopes he never loses his LOVE FOR LIFE. He does every activity with passion, enthusiasm, and gusto.

I want to recall that he learned a little French the summer that he turned three. Apparently he liked to scream BON JOUR while chapel was in session.

I want to remember that he only had one level and that was really really loud. He was incapable of using his "inside voice".

I want to remember that he was not a morning person nor did he wake up from his afternoon naps or any sleepy time without immediately going into a crying fit.

I want to have memories of how he greeted his brother each and every morning with "My Owen". In fact, he did this at school whenever he saw Owen pass by his classroom.

I want to remember that he loved fruits and vegetables -- always finishing those on his plate first.

I want to remember that he loved to sing throughout the house.

He was silly, goofy and was constantly laughing at himself.

Happy Birthday my beautiful baby boy!

Birthday Post...Bwahahaha!

Most of the time I use my camera for the greater good…you know, capturing memories that I can look back on years from now that give me a glimpse into what our lives were like when our boys were young.
Everyday moments of the boys...being best-buds...acting silly...and having fun with the simplest of activities...

And then today, I took my role as photographer to a sinister level.

At first my intentions were absolutely pure in that I wanted to celebrate their upcoming milestone birthdays with an impromptu photo shoot. Five and three seem like such big numbers to me, especially since in less than three weeks Owen will be starting kindergarten.

I found the photo idea on pinterest and at the time thought that the boys would love dressing up like superheroes AND of course anytime balloons are involved the boys always seem to have a blast.

So even though the pictures are absolutely adorable…I’m completely wicked in that I totally plan on using these pictures as blackmail against the boys for the REST OF THEIR LIVES!

Come in late from curfew…these will come out and be shared with friends, family members, complete strangers.

If I ever allow for them to get on any type of social media in the future (facebook) and they become naughty or break rules…these pictures will be posted as their profile pictures.

Perhaps I’ll even get t-shirts made with the pictures on the front and if they are really bad as punishment they will be forced to wear these to school.

Yup, evil is truly my middle name!

An Interview with a 4-Year Old

Prior to Father's Day I sat down with Owen and asked him some questions about his daddy. Owen is only four years old and his responses to the fill-in-the-blank questions were so...Owen. He is such a little character at only 4 years old (although he will tell you that he is 5)!

My dad is 8  years old.

His hair is short and his eyes are blue.

Dad likes to wear clothes.

He loves to eat healthy stuff like oranges and meat.

He is smart because he knows a bunch of stuff about difficult stuff.

My daddy works hard at weights.

Daddy always tells me that it's not okay to hit.

It makes my daddy happy when I hug him.

If he could go on a trip, he would go in the RV, and he would take  toys.

I really love it when my dad takes me for a walk.

If you could give daddy anything it would be a watch that can transform into a boat.

My favorite thing about my dad is because he is so special.

So to summarize some of Owen's responses...

Obviously Chris' healthy habits have made a significant impact on Owen considering half of his answers related to physical fitness, healthy eating habits and feeling young! That's what you get when you have a father that is an avid tri-athlete! I got a kick out of the fact that Owen made sure to balance Chris' diet by including meat and fruit.

My absolute favorite response is that Chris likes to "wear clothes"... apparently, to Owen, Chris doesn't like to be naked.

I love that Owen specified that his daddy is smart not only because he has a broad knowledge base but because he understands complex topics. Smarty pants!

Owen is our love-bug. He loves physical affection and hugs are pretty much his favorite thing in the whole world. If he's grumpy you can almost always give him a hug and his frown turns upside-down!

If you are familiar with the Teague boys, you know that they fight, wrestle, karate-chop each other nearly 90 percent of the time that they spend together. Therefore, the most common phrase in our household is "don't hit your brother" which applies to either boy.

I admit (embarrassingly), we allow our boys to watch Transformer (not the cartoon version but the one with Shia)...thus the gift that transforms into a moving object.

Happy Father's Day Chris... we love you and are so thankful that you like to wear clothes!

Why my son will hate cats when he is an adult

There are very few pictures of Luke that don’t include an important feature – albeit a critical piece of equipment – his ultimate trademark - his pacifier!
At the ripe old age of 2 ½ and the fact that we wanted to clearly hear the new beautiful words and language coming from those sweet little lips rather than the muffled Darth Vader version of words/sounds… we decided to abruptly end his love affair with pacifiers.
We are probably like all other parents and collected over a dozen different pacifiers, some still in their original packaging, you know, as spares just in case we lost the first twelve. They were hidden and tucked in all sorts of random spots throughout the house, in my purse, in the RV, strategically located in my car, under his bed/pillow, and even in the kids’ toy box! It was quite the covert scavenger hunt, eliminating one at a time so that it wasn’t entirely obvious that they were slowly disappearing or the once effortlessness it took to find one magic binky being discovered by the little man.  As you can imagine it took me several days to find all of them and (of course) place them in a special spot just in case he couldn’t handle the cold-turkey approach…or his mama couldn’t handle the potential scream fest that would occur when he realized they were gone.
While he was off playing and had abandoned the last little sucker I swooped in, grabbed and made a mad dash to my secret stash. It probably only took a few minutes before he realized it was gone and when he did he went around to all of the normal spots. It was so pathetic to watch this little guy walking around, “Where my pacifier”… “I can’t fine-it”. He looked around for probably 30 minutes, a sad little expression on his face every time he ended up empty-handed.
As I watched the initial signs of a meltdown, I blurted out the first thing that came to my mind…
“LUKE, THE CATS ATE YOUR PACIFIERS!
What, what did I just say?  Was I that chicken that I couldn’t tell my son the truth and say that his Daddy made me take them away from him? I’m the Mama, I’m supposed to be his anchor and instead I stole his one precious possession and there was no way in hell I was going to tell him it was my fault. Nope, it was much easier to blame the cats.
Really, the cats, that’s all you can come up with? However, if you have ever seen my cats, especially my rollie-pollie, fat-as-all-get-out BOO cat, you would understand why it would be plausible to a two-year old that a fatty cat could and would in fact eat ALL the pacifiers.
Luke repeated, “The cats ate my pacifiers”.
“Yes Luke, they were so hungry because Daddy and Mama forgot to feed the cats and so they went around and ate ALL of your pacifiers”
Unfortunately, I should have really considered the ramifications of placing blame before I blurted out that the cats, particularly that BOO was the culprit and responsible for the pacifier consumption. Couldn’t I have said a pacifier fairy came and took the pacifiers away to give away to children that weren’t so fortunate to have binkies? What about a freaking dinosaur… with snarly teeth, yes that would have been much better than the stupid cats because from that point on Luke HATES the cats.
The first night without his beloved binky he crawled into bed next to me and proceeded to give BOO, who was positioned by Chris’ feet, the evil-eye. Then the “poking” began. Luke crawled over to BOO who began hissing and growling sensing the hatred in the air, took his little chubby pointer finger and began jabbing BOO in the belly, as if trying to feel for his magic binkies. Then he went so far as to tell the cat, “BOO, say Ahhhhh”… and after she would meow he bent his head to the side to take a good look in her mouth while it was open. When her mouth closed he glanced towards my direction as if to say, “it’s not there, I can’t see it”.
He proceeded to tell everyone we met that the cats had eaten his pacifiers. He even told his teacher at school, who later told me that she knew something was up because he was on the “angry-side” that entire week!
***
So my apologies to:
-          Luke for scarring you for life and initiating your hatred for the feline species. I’ll be sure to remind you of this story so that you understand where the hatred comes from.

-          Future girlfriends, wife and children…please do not be surprised that when you ask for a sweet, little, fuzzy, meow-meow that he will roll his eyes in disgust.

-          Any cats that cross Luke’s path…I can’t guarantee your safety and would encourage you to get the heck-out-of-dodge!
And, my deepest condolences to Hunter and especially BOO – although, let’s be honest, you both hated the boys before this little event even happened, and therefore I’ve just given validation to why you can now officially hate children.

Please Try to Never Grow Up

Sitting in the pew at the church, the father-of-the-bride walking his sweet girl down the aisle, tears weren’t rolling down just her cheeks but my own. This wedding was so different in that this is the first wedding that I’ve been to since having become a mother to some amazing little creatures. My perspective changed on Saturday from focusing on the white dress, the beautiful bridesmaids, but to the families and especially the parents of the bride.

How many times did they imagine this moment for her…I bet they felt it was a world away and then all of sudden there they were walking her down the aisle, blowing bubbles as they exited the church and swaying to the music of the father/daughter dance. I could see in their eyes how quickly the time with her went by and with each tear all of the memories of her childhood and their family.

This morning as I was getting ready to the screams and giggles of the wild natives (also affectionately known as Owen and Luke) I heard an amazing song with lyrics that definitely resonated with what I’ve been feeling in my heart these last few days.

Your little hands wrapped around my finger
And it’s so quiet in the world tonight
Your little eyelids flutter cause you’re dreaming
So I tuck you in and turn on your favorite night light

To you, everything’s funny
You got nothing to regret
I’d give all I have honey
If you could stay like that

Oh darling don’t you ever grow up, don’t you ever grow up
Just stay this little
Oh darling don’t you ever grow up, don’t you ever grow up
It could stay this simple
I won’t let nobody hurt you
Won’t let no one break your heart
No one will desert you
Just try to never grow up (Never Grow Up – Taylor Swift)

I will relish in each and every moment because soon these will be memories of our time with our boys. Memories of the boys getting “dressed up” for the wedding and seriously not two seconds later jumping from the car and sliding in the muddy grass getting all types of stains on their khaki pants…Owen playing I Spy with My Little Eye on the way down to the beach…Luke trying to say beach but it sounding more like B*tch J…Owen and Luke falling in love with Crank (Craig)…bribing the boys with gummy bears at the ceremony…and the boys getting to meet some pretty amazing family members.

I’ll definitely be the mama weeping at their weddings, because darn…it went too quickly!
